Although Avatar: The Way of Water doesn't release until December 2022, director James Cameron is already defending the film's runtime. Released in 2009, Avatar introduced audiences to the fictional alien world of Pandora and its blue native inhabitants, the Na'vi. The film was a hit with audiences and critics and currently holds the top spot as the highest-grossing movie. It was promptly announced that four Avatar sequels were in the works, with Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña expected to return as Jake Sully and Neytiri, respectively.

Much remains unknown about Avatar: The Way of Water, but an initial trailer has already given audiences a glimpse at what will come when the film releases later this year. As reported months earlier, the trailer confirmed that the second film in the franchise would deal heavily with water environments and feature groundbreaking new CGI technology. Although her character died in the first film, Sigourney Weaver will be returning to voice one of Jake and Neytiri's children. In addition to Weaver, Stephen Lang will also be returning, with newcomers to the cast of Avatar: The Way of Water, including Michelle Yeoh, Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, and Jemaine Clement.
